This news story appeared as I was deep into writing this week’s county cricket newsletter.
It was entirely expected. In truth, the battle was lost long ago.
So I pressed delete. What’s the point in writing about county cricket anymore?
Certainly, I haven’t got the heart, enthusiasm or clarity to do it right now.
I’ll think on about my own ‘direction of travel’ and see you next week.
I can’t think of many good reasons to carry on thinking about or writing about what the ECB is doing to our game.
But one is to do what you’ve been doing, to document the lies and corruption, so after it all falls apart we can point to the guilty men.
Douglas Dunn’s poem “Instructions to a Saintly Poet” has these lines which have some bearing on our problem:
“Let others watch for longboats.
What can *you* do
Against pillagers
Other than write?”
Agree. I’m determined to see as much county cricket as possible while I can. When it and test cricket has gone (it’s inconceivable to me that test cricket can carry on when everything else will be 20 overs), I’ll cease to be interested…….
