The Strauss review was largely a response to England’s disappointing 2021 and their disastrous Ashes campaign. Yet there were a considerable number of mitigating factors for both of these, not least the stress of playing in Covid bubbies and the squad rotation that imposed. Fast forward 12 months and England are double world champions, beat India in a one off test and have won three series in a row including an away win in Pakistan. All without the loss of a single county championship fixture. I’m not saying county cricket is perfect but maybe the ECB should look at the bigger picture before reaching for the restructure button next time England fall below expectations.
